Deirdre K. Price is a scholar and playwright from Virginia. She is a current M.A. candidate in English at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, where her research investigates how the social and political categories of race, sexuality and gender, and nationality are textually co-constructed in 20th-century American literature. Her scholarly work is multidisciplinary and also takes up cultural objects such as film, TV, theatre and performance, and photography. 

 

Deirdre’s recent play the private apocalypse of where, tennessee has lately been read in New York City (The Bechdel Group, Menagerie Arts Coalition & Out of Order Collective) and in Blacksburg and Roanoke, VA (Future Economy Collective, Kitchen Sink Artist Collective). The Jupiter Bird has been performed at Hollins University, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and in New York City at the historic Under St. Marks with Frigid New York.

 

Current projects in process include: a new play that asks how we can live a personal feminist politic in/alongside late-stage capitalist angst (SUSAN B. ANTHONY EAT YOUR FUCKING HEART OUT); a new play that operates as a Beckettian precursor to the private apocalypse of where, tennessee (Push); an article on the tension between identity construction and utopianism as made present in 20th-century queer photography; and her master’s thesis, which inquires after queer citizenship and the construction of whiteness in James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room (1956). She is co-author of a chapter in the forthcoming Routledge Companion to James Baldwin (2026) and is presenting her work at multiple academic conferences this year. Deirdre earned her B.A. in English and Theatre from Hollins University.
